At the turn of the month I made a trek up to our neighbor to the North. After two weeks of non-stop work in NY, I hoped to catch five shows in Ontario. As luck would have it, a sudden snowstorm resulted in three of those shows getting cancelled! But a quick substitution meant I was able to see three shows after all. I hope to be back in Canada in June. By then most of the snow should be gone!
On Thursday I saw Portia Perez make a GCW W.I.L.D. title defense against the popular Danyah. This was a really great match. The women worked well together and the match psychology was excellent. I was really on pins and needles as to the outcome to the very last moment. Ms. Perez resorted to some ruthless [and blatant] choking, which is really too bad, because she is such a fine wrestler. Danyah took the high road, however, and managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat when, as she was about to be pinned, managed to reverse the pin and come out the winner of the match and the new GCW Women’s champion!
Saturday was PWA action in beautiful downtown Cambridge. The weather forced a few switcheroos for a house show in PWA’s new training facility. But the night’s women’s match pitted Amy Victory against Sabrina Kyle. From reports I read of the Ontario Indy scene [mostly from Gordo ... hey there, man!], it seems Amy rarely lives up to her name. But in this match she was “on” and had Ms. Kyle on the defensive most of the match. She was on the verge of wrenching a submission from Sabrina, when outside interference broke the match up. It seems Sara del Rey is coming to town, and her local representative wanted to put the women on notice to clear the way. Ah well. No doubt Sara is going to make an impact in Ontario, but the PWA match showed that Ms. Victory is prepared to give her a run for her money.
Sunday, it was BSE and a four way match [that really turned into a tag match] featuring TNA Knockouts Christy Hemme, Traci Brooks, and Gail Kim, plus “Au naturel” Kelly Couture. Gail and Traci formed an uneasy alliance and focused their attentions on Kelly, the least experienced woman in the ring. But Ms. Couture showed that she could not only absorb punishment, but dish it out as well. But when Kelly managed to tag Christy in, she cleared the ring of the bad girls. A facebuster on Traci set her up for Christy’s signature leg spread pin. A satisfying finish and the crowd was insane!
Despite the setbacks, a good trip. It was great to see Gordo, the Wizard and Mrs. Id again. I can never see enough of Danyah. I love her work and I wish some US promotions would book her; they would not be disappointed. Portia Perez is … as always … friggin awesome! [Although she seemed to blame ME for her loss at the end of the match! Ha! Look in the mirror kiddo!] Plus I got to meet and see in action a bunch of new people … Amy Victory and Sabrina Kyle, Kelly Couture, Gail Kim and Christy Hemme. Also Mercy and Haley Rogers, who were keeping their eyes on the competition, and Emmanuel Melo, the Photographer of Record for Ontario wrestling. Thanks to everyone who made the trip so enjoyable!
My pics will be going up over the next couple days.
