Well, it’s been a very long time since I’ve actually blogged, so I thought a brief recap of the MLW show and tapings last month would be in order.
First off, I can’t tell you how nice everybody was, especially promoter Darrell and his lovely wife Susan. Southern hospitality is not just a story. And of course it was great meeting a number of new wrestlers as well as some vets whom I’ve never met before. [Not to mention some familiar faces!]
Friday night, there was a match between Tasha Simone and Sarah Lynn at the TFW arena, which hosted MLW for the weekend. It was ‘old school’ all the way and the local crowd was very much into it [which was great especially because I don't think TFW normally has women workers]. But it was the best possible promo for Saturday night’s show.
Saturday afternoon I got to shoot some of the custom and straight to DVD matches MLW puts on. Some good wrestling, although most of the matches tended to be squashes of one kind or another [that seems to be a popular genre]. The absence of fans and fan reactions created a much different feel than a match in front of a crowd. I realized how much the wrestlers really do play to and draw on the fans’ enthusiasm and reactions, so while these matches were quite good, there was something missing. Still, some terrific wrestling and plenty of good shootin’! [from my camera that is] lol
The Saturday evening show was a lot of fun. Three short matches were all won by the heels [Josie, Hellena Heavenly, and Misty James], all with outside interference. This got the crowd quite worked up as well as the faces [Alere Little Feather, Sin-D, and Rock-C], who then challenged the heels to a 6 woman tag match. As you might have guessed, this led to a very exciting and satisfying victory for the faces, with Rock-C getting the win by a sleeperhold on Misty James. The crowd went wild. I was later told that this was classic Memphis-style wrestling. It worked for me and I think will look great on the DVD.
We then had a rematch of Sarah Lynn and ‘Molotov’ who is Tasha Simone’s masked alter ego. Quite an excellent and violent match which has Tasha come out on top once again. Tasha has some great mat work and Sarah, while still a bit green, kept up with Tasha and seems to be a practictioner of ’strong-style’ wrestling.
Little Jeanne returned to the ring for the first time since she joined the Army and had her littler one. She looked great as did Brandi Wine, whom I was thrilled to see again after four years. Brandi must do like a thousand crunches a day, she has such great abs. Brandi took the win over the Girl from Da Bronx, which was just fine with the dirty South crowd. These two are such fine wrestlers, I hope that they will be able to work a little more widely now that they are back in the wrestling scene.
The main event was Tasha Simone back as ‘herself’ versus newcomer Su Yung. I don’t think Moolah herself was ever as mean as Tasha was. Tasha had the crowd [and Su Yung] up in arms when she brought her boa constrictor into the ring with her. Su Yung was game all the way through, even nearly getting the pin once or twice, but Tasha was determined not only to win but to punish the upstart Rookie of the Year. Su Yung looked like she was dead by the time it was over. But we shall see if Tasha Simone’s hold on the MLW title is secure as she now has both Su Yung and Sarah Lynn gunning for it.
Overall, a great time. Plus I got to see Elvis’ birthplace! The DVD’s should be excellent. Be sure to check out my pictures and visit the MLW website to see when the DVD’s are released.
