Wrestlicious Episode 2

The only match on this one is Autumn Frost vs Paige Webb (Jennifer Blake vs Serena Deeb) Not a bad match but they seem really hampered by a small ring. 7 minutes of wrestling which is a nice length, but when its the only match on the show … ?

Mia Yim Wins VCW Liberty Belt … for 5 Minutes!

John Kermon had just won the much-coveted VCW US Liberty Title after defeating Horrorshow in an amazing match in beautiful downtown Virginia Beach, VA. But after insisting that Steffi the Ref place the belt on him, the little misogynist began bad-mouthing women’s wrestling at VCW, going so far as to put his newly acquired title on the line against any woman in the VCW locker room. Mia Yim, fresh from an impressive victory over Kristin Flake and Diva Dynamite took up that challenge. After verbally demoralizing an over-confident Mr. Kermon, she gave him a super-kick that nearly took his head off. Dazed, Kermon was easy prey as Ms. Yim rolled him up for a pin and … so everyone assumed … the title. But the crowds cheers were quickly tunred to stunned silence when Mr. Kermon’s manager declared that the wrestler did not have the authority to put his title on the line and that, without explicit VCW sanction, Mia Yim’s win was of no consequence. Ms. Yim was nonplussed by this turn of events, but gave over the title. But needless to say, this story is not over! The Rate Tank with a Heart of Gold

Australian women’s wrestling sensation Kellie Skater is most well known for her mean streak and loose attitude toward the rules. But it’s always nice to see that underneath all the fuss and bluster, “The Rate Tank” has a good heart. This Sunday she will be participating in a run (walk, she says … doctor’s orders!) to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital in Victoria, Australia. Click the pic and go to her donation page where you can show her some support and raise money for a good cause. (FYI – one Australian dollar is about 90 cents US)

But while Ms. Skater may have a soft heart for the kiddies, her potential opponents at SHIMMER next month should in no way interpret that as a sign of weakness! Remember, she is “virtually indestructible”

Sandra Bullock Refs at VCW????

Sure looks like it! But no, the sultry beauty in stripes is Steffi (the wrestler formerly known as Mia Love), who made a name for herself as a rough-and-tumble, take-no-prisoners grappler in New England, but who now resides in Virginia. Her appearance as ref at a recent VCW show in Virginia Beach, VA was noteworthy in that it represented her first time back in the ring after giving birth to a beautiful baby son just a few weeks ago. She assured this correspondent that she would be back kicking ass in ring sooner rather than later. Congrats Steffi, both on your son and on your ring return!

Wrestlicious: You Be the Judge!

“The worst thing to happen to women’s wrestling in 20 years”? That’s how one keen observer of the women’s wrestling scene characterized Wrestlicious, which debuted last night. Pretty strong words, but if you want to see what all the buzz is about missed it on TV, you can still see the whole debut episode above (without the commercials!).

Speaking for myself, I watched it out of pure curiosity and because I knew at least some of their workers were top flight indy talent. It seemed to want to be a reincarnation of GLOW. Now I happened to enjoy GLOW when it was on, but I have to say (as many others have already said) that GLOW was fine in that place and time. But too much water has gone over the dam since then to warrant a re-do. Thanks to a lot of factors, real women’s wrestling has earned a lot more respect and attention than it had in the early 1980’s. Women’s matches are some of the most popular segments of WWE and TNA. SHIMMER and WSU and other women’s promotions have arrived and demonstrate the appetite for excellence in women’s wrestling. Places like MLW, Slamminladies and Clickwrestle have made quality women’s wrestling available to everybody. To create a GLOW clone is just not the way to go. I think the producers understood that implicitly, however, by realizing that they needed women who could actually wrestle, and to that extent, the tag match on the debut, which included Mercedes Martinez, Rain, Amber O’Neal and Lorelei Lee was far better wrestling than you would have seen on GLOW or POWW or WOW or any of the other failed imitations. Still, the match seemed ‘dumbed down’ a bit (perhaps to accomodate the two untrained models who shared the ring with them) and not up to speed for any of the women involved. (I liked the costumes though! lol )

But watch the video above and judge for yourself!
